Hexadecyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride

The cationic surfactant eMAI™ 1631 (hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) is a colorless to pale yellow paste or solid, soluble in water and readily soluble in ethanol and isopropanol aqueous solutions. With good chemical stability, it is resistant to heat, light, pressure, and strong acids and alkalis, and provides penetrating, emulsifying, antistatic, biodegradable, and biocidal properties, delivering excellent sterilization, disinfection, softening, antistatic, and corrosion-inhibiting effects. It is widely used in: Industrial water treatment: As a high-efficiency biocide/algaecide for microbial control in circulating cooling water and oilfield water injection systems. Household chemicals and textiles: As a main component of hair conditioners and fabric softeners, providing a soft, smooth hand feel and antistatic performance. Mining and petroleum: As a modifying agent in organic bentonite modification, and as a phase-transfer catalyst and flotation agent; also usable in emulsified muds. Medical and hygiene: For skin disinfection, medical instrument disinfection, and cleaning/disinfection of environmental surfaces; also usable in blood sample analysis. Ink additives: Enhances the function of the ink's main components (colorants and binders), improving ink characteristics.

Overview and Applications

Varying C12, C16, and C18 alkyl chains and benzyl/trimethyl headgroups tunes solubility, adsorption, and interfacial activity for industrial water treatment, textile softening and antistatic finishing, personal-care conditioning, disinfection, and oilfield or mineral-processing formulations.
