Fatty-amidopropyl betaine (AHSB) combines a C12–C18 hydrophobic chain, an amide linkage, and a zwitterionic betaine group. Its charge adapts to pH: it behaves more cationically in strong acid, reaches strong interfacial activity near the isoelectric range, and becomes more anionic in alkaline media, where emulsification and dispersion improve. Hydrogen bonding from the amide group strengthens adsorption on metal oxides and proteins.

In hard-water cleaning, AHSB can disperse calcium soaps and retain foam; in oilfield chemistry it remains compatible with polymer flooding agents, corrosion inhibitors, and biocides; and in coatings it combines electrostatic and steric stabilization. Its value is the balanced compatibility of a formulation buffer, not simply a single-purpose surfactant.
