AEO Series: From 3 to 20 — How Changing One Model Number Reshapes Emulsification, Cleaning, and Solubilization

From AEO-3 to AEO-20, each step in the EO number shifts the molecule from W/O emulsification toward solubilization and leveling. Decode how EO number, HLB, cloud point, and carbon-chain length interact, with a scenario-based AEO selection quick table.

AEO (fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether) is the largest-volume nonionic surfactant worldwide. Its molecule pairs a lipophilic fatty-alcohol chain with a hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chain, and the EO number (n value) between them is the knob that balances the two halves: moving from EO 3 to 20 shifts the molecule from a W/O emulsifier all the way to a solubilizing/leveling agent. Four rules govern the EO-number gradient: HLB rises with EO but with diminishing returns (AEO-3→7 adds about +1.5 per EO, while AEO-9→20 adds only +0.10); cloud point rises with EO but is capped (AEO-3/4/5 are insoluble in water with no cloud point, AEO-7 sits at 50–70°C, AEO-9 at 70–95°C, and AEO-15/20 exceed 100°C in pure water and must be measured in 5% NaCl solution), making cloud point the temperature red line; emulsification flips from W/O to O/W around HLB 9–10, entering solubilization above HLB 15; and interfacial behavior shifts from fast adsorption to stronger stability.

Carbon-chain length is often overlooked: C8-10 favors wetting and penetration, C12-14 favors foaming and detergency (the mainstay of household detergents), and C16-18 favors emulsification and thickening (cosmetics and textile oils), with the same AEO-9 differing by up to 30% across chain sources. The article closes with a scenario-based selection table: W/O emulsification and oil-phase dispersion → AEO-3/4/5; O/W emulsification, detergency, and wetting → AEO-7/9; high-temperature cleaning above 80°C → AEO-9/15; fragrance solubilization and electroplating brightening → AEO-15; dye leveling and scouring → AEO-20; and AES/SLES feedstock production → AEO-3.
